Dave Lister signed up for the space corps hoping it would take him back to Earth unfortunately there was a huge atomic explosion on the ship forcing the ships computer Holly to set a course out of the solar system to avoid contaminating other planets. Fortunately Lister had been put into deep sleep (stasis) during this as punishment for bringing a cat on board ship. 3 million years later... Lister is awoken from deep sleep to discover that the crew have been wiped out by the explosion however, his cat has slowly evolved into a human like form and his deceased bunk-mate has been brought back by Holly in the form of a Hologram. Two years later (5 episodes) Kryten (a service android) is discovered on a derelict ship. This is the adventures of the space zero‘s.
