From time to time the WebMasher is sent guff by other bashes/ hashes advertising
Believe it or not we have a doppelganger! Quite out of the blue I recieved the following e-mail the other day from the secretary of this lot: Dear Roger Crabb Was most interested to have my attention drawn to your Cambridge Randomly Active Bikehash website. Our own drinking club with a cycling problem has been pottering along since 1975, getting nowhere in particular and enjoying it enormously. I attach a copy of this year's programme which will give you an idea of the sort of things we do, with usually a dozen or a score of members in attendance. Oddly enough I discovered your website on returning at the end of last week from a few days in Cambridge - where I have been researching the story of Aellopodes, the giant tricycle famous/infamous in the city during the 1840s and 1850s. Perhaps had I known of your existence we could have met up for a beer! Anyway, I think we should definitely be "twinned" with you, which would involve no more perhaps than a mutual swopping of annual programmes (we don't currently have our own website). We're probably a little too far away to expect much more than this, though obviously if any of your members happen to be down this way they would be very welcome at any of our meetings - if bikeless they could at least take part in the more important function at the hostelry! CRABS all over! (our official toast) Roger Street Chairman of the CRABS Christchurch Ramshackle Antique Bicycle Society C R A B S 2001
The CRABS odyssey continues - despite off-road restrictions imposed by the current foot-and-mouth epidemic. This year's programme (27th Season) promises to be at least as varied and enjoyable as ever, with one or two interesting innovations. The democratisation of the CRABS continues apace - this year that well-known expert on local hostelries David Pardy joins the ever-growing number of CRABS Organisers responsible (or irresponsible) for the planning of one or more rides. [Chairman's message] Sunday 22nd April - Daffodil RunMeet 12.30am at The Inn on the Chase, Cashmoor (north of Horton) on the A354 (Salisbury - Blandford rd) for an undulating ride through gentle hills. Tour Chettle House with tea. Check your brakes & tyres after the winter break! (Org. Andrew & Barbara) Sunday 6th May - A Potty RunMeet for lunch at the Turf Cutters, East Boldre then we'll ride through leafy lanes and via an old abbey towards Beaulieu for tea. (Org. Potty Sue & Dave) Friday 18th May - Mini Stagger - Where have all the Old Pubs Gone?Meet 7.30 at the New Inn, Christchurch on Fairmile Rd. (over the railway bridge). We'll be raising our hats at all the sites of former Christchurch pubs. Fortunately there are still enough pubs open in Christchurch to make it a memorable mini stagger (Org. Dave Pardy) Sunday 10th June - the Mottisfont Abbey Pilgrimage. Pub lunch/drink 1.00 p.m. onwards at The Boot, Houghton (off the A3057 Romsey to Stockbridge road), then a delightful ride along the Test Valley to Mottisfont House and Gardens (now owned by the National Trust). The walled rose garden is magnificent at this time of year. Tea in the restaurant, then back to the pub by another route. Not to be missed. [Historical footnote: we were last here on Easter Monday just 25 years ago - the Chairman, Chris, Wendy & Nigel (and others) were present.] (Org. Chairman) Sunday 24th June - Summer PicnicMeet at the Stocks Inn at Furzehill near Wimborne for an early lunch and then depart for a gentle meander through country lanes and bridle ways (foot & mouth permitting) arriving at Pamphill Green for Picnic and Rounders. Boys thrashing Girls as in 2000 if they'll let us.....then we'll play rounders! (Org. Julie, Craig & Megan) Friday 6th July - Curry CaperMeet 7.30pm at The Waterloo Arms (101 Waterloo Rd, Freemantle) Lyndhurst for a hard ride to work up an appetite at the Passage to India Curry House (Romsey Rd). (Org. Chris & Sharon) Sunday 8th July - CTC ride to celebrate the 125th Anniversary of the Christchurch Bicycle Club. Again not strictly a CRABS event, but some of us may want to lend support - certainly the Chairman will as his book "Victorian High-Wheelers" was apparently the inspiration for the ride. Anyone wanting to take part should attend at Café 39 (Pines Hotel), Mudeford, 6 for 6.15 p.m., or if you're still recovering from Chris' Curry Caper on Friday evening the riders will be taking refreshment at The Woolpack, Sopley, between about 7-8.30 p.m. Should be good.
Sunday 15th July - inaugural ride of "The Dandy Chargers".
Sunday 22nd July - the Ibsley Treasure Hunt. Sunday 5th Aug - Blazer & Boater RideMeet for lunch at the Athelston Arms, Tuckton (intersection of Athelston Rd and Cranleigh rd). Then ride to Hengistbury head and across the Mudeford ferry for tea. Don't forget your blazer / camisole & hats - and your swimming gear! (Org. Sharon & Chris) Sunday 19th August Meet for lunch at the Tap & Railway, West Moors for a ride to Moors Valley Country Park with tea. (Org. Richard & Anne) Sunday 9th September - Blackberry RunStart at Rising Sun Inn, Wootton (2 miles N of New Milton on B3058) for a ride through the forest / lanes of Ossemsley, Tiptoe and Bashley ending up after picking blackberries for tea at the Sammy Miller Motor Cycle Museum at Bashley Manor. Free admission to tea rooms, farm animals and shops but £3.50 for adults & £1.50 for children to enter the museum for those not alergic to bikes with engines. Tea rooms and museum close 4.30pm so lets make a prompt start from the pub at 2.30 pm. Dress - Blackberry or fruits of the forest. (Org. Paul & Hilary)
Sunday 16th September - CRABS Bicycle polo Make a note in your diary. Details to follow. Visit www.bikepolo.com for rules and strategies. (Org. Vice Chairman) Saturday 17th November - CRABS Annual Dinner. Back in Christchurch at Sancho's Restaurant in Bridge Street this year, where John and Beverley have promised to provide a sumptuous feast at modest expense. More details later. (Org. Chairman) Tuesday 1st January 2002. The traditional local ride to celebrate the New Year - as if the night before wasn't enough! More later. (Org. Chairman) Cycle Safety Chris is now a certified cycling proficiency instructor. He suggests (rather too sensibly?) that all CRABS should wear a Sam Browne belt with a quick release buckle manufactured in hard wearing flexible webbing fabrics (sounds kinky!) in a fluorescent yellow providing visibility in daylight & at night. A must for CRABS - how often do we have lights on our bikes at night? Medium £5.50, Large £8.50, Xlarge £9, XXLarge £9.50.
