The Computer switch access levels

The following scheme is an assessment checklist based on the scheme written by Tina Detheridge to assess responses to computer based stimuli. It has been adapted to fit with the switch access progression as used and developed by Richard Walter at Meldreth Manor school.
Briefly the switch progression devides switch access into 5 levels:

Level 0 programs have no input (no direct switch control by the pupil).
Level 1 programs require a single input (one discrete switch press).
Level 2 programs require multiple inputs (multiple switch presses).
Level 3 programs require a specific input (a switch press at a specific time)
Level 4 programs require a choice to be made from a range of alternatives ( from a choice of switches or options).
Level 5 programs require a choice to be made from a grid (press the switch when the choice is highlighted i.e. scanning)

The pages are graphic images and can be printed as screen dumps or downloaded into a desktop publisher and resized etc.
The switch levels are not strictly developmental but we have found them practically quite useful for categorising software and in helping to give some clues to the question 'where do we go next?'. There is more information on the switch progression on the Meldreth Manor school text web site: (http://www.argonet.co.uk/users/richard.walter/)
The switch access progression is obviously only a part of a total assessment package. It looks at only one narrow area of the pupils possible development and needs to be used in conjuction with a full assessment schedule. The f,s and n in the recording boxes mean frequently, sometimes, and never with a further box for comments.
