Six go Mad in Lancaster

On the 4th of July, when the rest of the pupils at The Lakes School took a day off to have a sports day, six good guys decided to pursue their love of Mathematics by taking a trip to Saint Martins College in Lancaster. This page has been hastily put together by the good guy who drove them there!
The pictures were taken with a digital video camera and stills taken from the video. I apologise if the quality is not quite as good as usual.
Mike and dead fishOur first picture hopefully shows Mike sorting out the "dead fish". Yes, we know they look like multicubes but trust us, they represent dead fish. For a full explanation of this activity, which turns out to be related to exponential functions, talk to Mike or send us an email.

Picture two shows Sam and Paul about to solve the problem of finding the area under the curve. There really is a curve there if you look closely enough.Paul and Sam and the curve

There is no guarantee that these pictures will line up as I really would want so the next couple I have put centred. (I hope)
First is Peter and his friend, seen during a session about the Mandelbrot set. Peter is clearly deep in thought. The background of this page is a section of the Mandelbrot set.

Next is Tim giving the Sierpinski Carpet some serious consideration. Imagine, the idea of a shape with zero surface area???
Tim

Another picture of Tangwyn and Tim as they pit their wits against two other students in a strategy game.
Tango and Tim
Tim and Tangwyn appear again, (they are popular guys), this time sampling the delights of Origami, creating a cube from 6 parallelograms.

Another picture of Peter, this time al fresco, trying to solve a factor puzzle.
Mike and PeteMike is also there in the picture but hiding behind his question paper. Dunno who that is in the background, just another member of Pete and Mike's problem solving group.
Questions about any of this can be given to any of the "MAD squad", Mike, Paul, Peter, Sam, Tangwiyn or Tim. And I enjoyed it too. Thanks to all the staff and students in the Maths Department at Saint Martins College.
