Councillor on Medway Council: Road Repairs and Other Work

John Ward

Below are current road works known to me, followed by a table showing the roads/footpaths that have been resurfaced or otherwise repaired under the ongoing programme of repair work. The more detailed "current works" section covers works that are going on at the moment (to avoid making it overlong) but this does mean that occasionally something has just happened and has already been completed by the time it is notified to me. If you encounter something going on that isn't up here, do please let me know where and what it is (and, if possible, by when it is expected to finish) and I'll put it on this page for everyone's benefit.

If there is ongoing work that requires traffic control measures, this will be indicated by a traffic cone symbol, thus: Traffic cone

Latest News on Current Road Works

Traffic cone Maidstone Road, by Asda Traffic cone

A gantry is to be erected by the Asda store (A229, southbound) on either 25, 26 or 28 February, and this will close the road for just a few minutes—should be no more than ten minutes. There will be traffic cones, signs and a police presence for this operation.

Park & Ride Site, Marconi Way

At last the work on the roadworks/signalling scheme is now complete. I have now managed to get the incorrectly-positioned stop lines in Maidstone Road when coming from City Way re-painted in the right place.

I am also attempting to ensure that the flower beds will be replaced: they have been quietly removed without our consent or any consultation, so we are having that corrected as a joint effort between Horsted and Warren Wood Councillors (as this location falls right on the boundary between the two wards). Expect to see this and related improvements soon.

Traffic cone M2 Widening, Bridgewood Roundabout Traffic cone

This long-running work by CSM for the Highways Agency is currently expected to take almost another year: end date is scheduled as 30th November 2002, representing "medium expected delays". Cones and barriers will continue to be used for traffic management.

In the meantime, the Taddington Junction is about to be partially-opened, with coast-bound traffic being diverted over the recently-completed Taddington Bridge. London-bound traffic will in future be routed off the Taddington roundabout before the exit for the coast.

There has been some confusion about the loss of the right turn into and out of Asda: this is a permanent change.

Road Repairs & Resurfacing

As you will no doubt have noticed, we have at last been able to tackle the long-term problem of the state of our roads and, to a lesser extent, footpaths. This programme of work commenced almost immediately the Conservative administration's first budget was put in place, in April 2001.

Below is a table showing the work already completed within Horsted ward and when other roads/paths become scheduled to be done. This will be updated regularly, as other roads are identified for work.

Road Gritting

You might be interested to know that between Saturday 1st December 2001 and Friday 21st December, the gritters carried out 11 primary runs (i.e. along essential routes to allow traffic to flow freely): in November there had been six of these.

During the cold spell that began on the very next day (Saturday 22nd December) there have been 14 primary runs and five secondary runs. This means that primary roads were gritted on average twice daily during this time.

The gritters are on standby round the clock so they can hit the roads when the temperature starts to drop. Should snow fall later this winter the gritters can be fitted with snowploughs to tackle the most severe weather conditions, although that still doesn't mean they would be able to cope with the Davis Estate which usually ends up effectively cut off to most traffic at such times.
