The Multi-Organ Transplant Program at the London Health Sciences Centre is
one of Canada's leading transplant programs, performing about 200 transplants annually. Many types of transplants are done at our hospital: bone marrow,
bowel, heart, heart-lung, kidney, liver, and lung. Researchers continue to
investigate the immune system and ways to prevent rejection as well as new
strategies to increase the number of organs for transplant.
Members, affectionately called the Harefield Hamsters because of the puffy faces associated with steroid anti-rejection drugs, are of all ages and will have received transplanted hearts, heart/lungs or lungs.
As well as giving individual support to those who have received or are waiting for transplants the Hamsters have a lively social calendar. There is an annual Reunion Weekend; members have flourishing Badminton and Volleyball Teams and organise an annual fundraising "jog". The club is well represented and very successful at the British and European Transplant Games.
Fundraising has always been an important task of the Club. The Harefield Hospital Supporters Club was formed in 1994 and has raised £450,000 to date. The aim is to raise £1.5M to purchase a Ultrafast CT Scanner.
Funds are raised by means of the Annual Harefield Fete; the Harefield jog,; "Healthy Heart " walks, and the London Marathon as well as raffles, coffee mornings and various sporting events.
